23 January 2015

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) have officially requested the Government of Pakistan to protect a journalist who has received death threats from the Taliban.

In a letter to the Interior Minister, Mr Chaudhry Khan, the IFJ and the its Pakistani affiliate PFUJ asked for the protection of Zia ul Haq, news bureau chief of ARY News who was recently threatened with death by the militants.

According to the PFUJ, the Taliban’s spokesperson Ihasan Ullah Ihsan called the journalist’s personal mobile phone using an international mobile number (+93767895493) to warn him of “severe consequences if ARY News continues to refuse to propagate the Taliban’s views and the PFUJ continues its opposition of the Taliban.”
