The 55-year-old crime reporter was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Mexican state of Veracruz and became the tenth journalist to be killed in the country since the start of the year in work-related incidents.

Cándido Ríos, who worked for the Diario de Acayucan, was shot in the south of Veracruz while he was with two other people, including a former police officer. The journalist had received death threats since 2012, mainly from the local administration officials,for his reporting. He was admitted into the protection programme for human rights defenders and journalists, according to the Comisión Estatal para la Atención y Protección de los Periodistas (CEAPP).
