26 IFEX Members Join IFJ to Press UN Security Council on Media Protection in Yemen

23 June 2015

26 IFEX members have signed an appeal launched by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to the UN Security Council for drastic measures to protect journalists in Yemen. In the joint appeal sent to the Malaysian ambassador to the UN and Chair of the Council for June, H.E Dato' Ramlan Ibrahim, the press freedom organisations urge the UN Security Council to consider " as a matter of priority, all necessary measures to protect journalists who are reporting on the conflict in the country."

According to the Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate (YJS), an IFJ affiliate quoted in the appeal, eight journalists and media staff have been killed in Yemen since the start of 2015. In addition, 12 journalists are currently being held hostage and their lives are feared to be in danger.
